2020 Practice-based Research Network (PBRN) Conference
The PBRN Conference welcomed 130 PBRN researchers from the US, Canada, and many other nations to come together virtually to share strategies, methods, and results. The theme for the 2020 conference was "PBRNs: Living Laboratories for Innovation and Dissemination/Implementation in our Communities" The agenda included includes innovations and research projects on diverse topics of interest to community clinicians, practice facilitators/study coordinators, and network leadership.

Implementation Sustainability
Dr. Sharon Straus
Dr. Sharon E. Straus is a geriatrician and clinical epidemiologist who trained at the University of Toronto and the University of Oxford. She is the Director of the Knowledge Translation Program and Physician-in-Chief, St. Michael’s Hospital and Professor in Department of Medicine, University of Toronto.
In health care, we often see substantial resources spent on implementation of pilot projects and subsequent failure to address sustainability. While health research is produced at an exponential rate, health systems fail to optimally implement evidence in decision making, resulting in reduced quality of life, lost productivity and research waste, estimated at >$200 B. After successful implementation, there is often a tendency to return to old practices after implementation activities end and attention moves to the next initiative. Even if implementation has a small benefit, sustained implementation can have significant potential impact. Thus, failure to sustain implementation has implications for cost and patient care, and diminishes trust and support for future implementation. Strategies to facilitate sustainability include tailoring implementation strategies to the context and using an intersectionality lens to ensure strategies are relevant to the diverse populations they are intended to target.

Advancing the Science of Implementation: An NIH Perspective
Dr. David Chambers
Dr. David Chambers is Deputy Director for Implementation Science in the Office of the Director in the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Dr. Chambers manages a team focusing on efforts to build and advance the field of Implementation Science (IS) through funding opportunity announcements, training programs, research activities, dissemination platforms, and enhancement of partnerships and networks to integrate research, practice and policy.
This talk will focus on the need for implementation science, recent activities, and opportunities to advance the field in the future. In addition to presenting an introduction to theories and frameworks, initiatives, and key concepts, the presenter will review assumptions about the pathway from research to practice and discuss the implications of those assumptions on the ability to maximize the benefit of discoveries for healthcare delivery. The presentation will conclude with discussion of next steps for the field and the potential value of PBRNs in advancing the science of implementation.
